Lucy (a pseudonym) is from the Philippines. After graduating from high school, she decided to apply for work in Taiwan, where wages are higher and the opportunity to support her family was greater. After working steadily for a few years, she found herself at a stage in life where marriage became a consideration. Through a friend, she met Marco, a fellow Filipino. They got to know each other, fell in love, and eventually decided to get married and build a life together in a foreign land.
One day, Lucy discovered she was pregnant.
The news brought joy, but also worry. While both Lucy and Marco looked forward to welcoming a new life, Lucy couldn’t help but fear losing her job because of the pregnancy. She even wondered whether she should go through with having the baby. After the child was born, there were more concerns—how would they register the baby’s identity and apply for legal residency? Without a job, how would they afford to raise the child?
Fortunately, Lucy received guidance and support from a social worker at the Garden of Hope Foundation’s Migrant Service Center (GOH-Migrants). The social worker explained that Lucy didn’t have to worry about losing job opportunities just because she was pregnant. She could safely give birth in Taiwan, and her baby’s legal residency and basic rights would be protected.
With their help, Lucy successfully applied for maternity benefits through labor insurance, which helped cover her living expenses while she was out of work. Once the baby was well taken care of, Lucy was able to return to work and continue building a stable life.
If you, or someone you know, is in a similar situation, don’t hesitate to reach out to the GOH-Migrants. We are here to walk alongside you.
